Principal
Mr. Steven Eskay’s journey into education began while advocating for at-risk students with IEPs as a second-year law student in the special education clinic at University of the District of Columbia (UDC). While there, he accepted a part-time position teaching U.S. History to juveniles incarcerated as adults at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility. During his time teaching the U.S. Constitution to incarcerated juveniles he saw the interconnections between poverty, race, disability, and lack of educational opportunity that inspired him to dedicate his career to change.
He started at DC Public Schools as a special education teacher at Garrison Elementary. After three years there, he coached DCPS teachers in reading and math instruction as a Teacher Leader, wrote Cornerstones Project Based Learning Tasks for the district, led district-wide seminars on data-driven instruction and improved student data. During the 2017-18 school year, 40% of his students with IEPs were proficient on the PARCC ELA Test and 100% of them met their growth goals in math with an average yearly increase of nearly two grade bands on the IREADY Math Assessment.
Most recently, as a Manager of Specialized Instruction and Assistant Principal at Payne Elementary, Mr. Eskay led the operational and instructional priorities of the school that included the equitable alignment of self-contained programs with school-wide expectations, the establishment of a responsive, equity focused Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) system, and a school wide movement of instructional practice towards more engaging, data-driven, individualized instruction.
Mr. Eskay holds a Juris Doctor of Law from University of the District of Columbia, a Master of Arts in Special Education from American University, Magna Cum Laude, and a BA in English from The College of William and Mary.
Meet all our faculty and staff.
